Flight Rising is a browser based virtual pet game about collecting, breeding, and dressing up dragons.

The first time I heard about Flight Rising was from my sister, who told me the author of some of our favorite "how to draw" books had a dragon themed game coming out. I adored Neondragon's how to draw books, but my favorite of her's was actually the color workbook. My sister wouldn't let me color directly in the book, so instead I would scan whatever page I wanted to draw and print a version of the line art onto printer paper. One of my favorites was the "Eastern Dragon Hatchling" art, which while not identical, very much resembles the Imperial hatchling art in the game. The line art for the Fae and Guardian hatchlings in this book are actually identical to their art in game, something that's always made them feel a little special to me.

I remember messing with the dragon creator with my sister but not delving further, until I started hearing about the game again years later when I was in middle school. I wasn't into Neopets or any other pet site, Flight Rising was my first, and it still remains one of the only pet sites that have really clicked with me (now joined by Pawborough).

I've had Faye for a very long time now. She's only 5 days older than my account! She also got on the front page once. I love how her outfit looks on her, the yellow matches her tertiary so well. I love looking at her, she's beautiful.

To be a bit honest, she's a little bit ugly under all that apparel. Crocodile is just... not a great shade of green. It pairs okay with Blush but her tertiary is Thylacine which also doesn't pair great with Shimmer, her secondary. But I can cover her with clothes and make her all pretty so it's fine.

FAE DRAGONS

If you've checked out my lair by now, you've probably noticed that my Fae dragons far outnumber any of my other breeds. This is because I'm obsessed with them. I've loved them since I first saw the hatchling art in that Neondragon coloring book. I have a Fae hoarding problem. In my early days on Flight Rising I had a hard time selling any Faes I hatched, so I still have two of my Progenitors' first hatchlings and a third from a later nest,

You can probably tell that I held no love in my heart for any of their Tundra children. Nero isn't quite done, she still needs her tertiary (Veined), but I really like her colors. Garnet is just such a good color with Aqua. Caelum has none of his planned genes (Jaguar, Noxide, Stained) but I promise he will look very nice. Luto is all done though! She has all her genes (Tide, Foam, Smirch) and her outfit is complete too (though I might change that bandana some day).

Imber is my beloved clown. She was one of my first ever Auction House buys and I treasure her. She's also one half of one of my favorite breeding pairs. As you can see, she's mostly dark grays, meanwhile her mate, Firn (#45659121) has both White for his primary and secondary. This puts their kids' primaries and secondaries in the gray range which I think looks great with Jaguar or Speckle. Her tertiary (Firefly) isn't very good but sometimes the kids will come out with Opal instead, which is always nice.

Bellus, Egestas, and Calces are all from Imber's first nest and Eser is from her second. Bellus is very pretty, except for her Umber Firefly tertiary, which makes her look a bit like she smell like trash and flies are gathering around her. Bit of a funny contrast. I don't have much to say about Egestas. She really needs a new outfit, maybe I would like her more if she did. Calces has an outfit I really like though, especially his Emerald Gas Mask. With the context of him being born in Nature and moved to Plague, it seems like he can't handle all the sickness in the Scarred Wasteland. Eser's theme is just orange. I put him in orange things. The first three are also all from before I moved from Nature to Plague flight, but interestingly Eser's Plague Rare eyes make it look like he still has a little bit of green in them. I just think that's neat.

I also have an Auction House problem. Never let me into the dragon section of the AH, I will be walking out with another Fae meant for fodder. For example,

Kagogan has a very bad tertiary color. I have scried him many times and nothing can be done for him. But I bought him and dressed him up cute so now he's mine forever and I can never exalt him as he was no doubt intended to be. Taruskith I'm less emotionally attached to, I bought her on impulse because I thought she looked nice and I've actually thought about getting rid of her, but then I noticed that she can make some pretty babies with one of my Coatls so she's sticking around. Lehana is also a pretty baby haver, with one of my Skydancers. The moment I bought Teatime I bought a bunch of apparel for her. I just knew the pink-ish red would look so good on her. I plan on getting her a new secondary but that's not a top priority right now.

These two aren't impulse buys... sort of. I bought Lucialle because I was looking for breeding project pair, only to realize too late that his tertiary is kind of ugly. But I liked him already! Cherub looks so good on him! So he's sticking around now, even after his hypothetical mate was exalted. The hatchling is from a water egg I got while scavenging during a Wavecrest Saturnalia. I couldn't decide whether to sell it or hatch it, so I flipped a coin and gambled on a good gen 1. Instead I got him. He's not terrible but putting together a good scry for him has been difficult... I might sell him. But I haven't decided yet.

I literally only bought Grog because I thought his name was funny and now I can't bring myself to get rid of him even though he's kind of butt ugly. Every time a new breed comes out I have to check if he can be salvaged but he is simply doomed. He will always be ugly.
